Gangubai Kathiawadi shares the story of a young woman who is forced into prostitution simply against her will. From there Gangubai Kathiawadi embarks on her journey from a prostitute to becoming a messiah. The titular character is played by Alia Bhatt. Gangubai Kathiawadi brings the story of a young woman, Ganga Harjivandas, who dreams of becoming an actress. In the early 1950s, Ganga runs away from her small town of Kathiawad with her boyfriend, Ramneek played by Varun Kapoor. Ramneek betrays her and sells her to a brothel in Mumbai run by Sheela. It is here that Ganga is forced into prostitution and named Gangu. Gangu became rebellious and invited wrath from Sheela but her attitude grabbed the attention of visitors and she soon became a popular prostitute in her brothel. Gangu was attacked by a man named, Shaukat Abbas Khan, who visited the brothel and attacked Gangu. Gangu went for justice for Rahim Lala, played by Ajay Devagn, who becomes a sworn brother of Gangu. After the death of Sheela, Gangu takes over the brothel. Gangu falls in love with a young tailor named Afsaan Razzaq, played by Santanu Roy. But she arranges his marriage with the daughter of one of her prostitutes, to protect the young girl from prostitution. Eventually, Gangu decides to run in Kamathipura presidential elections against Raziabai and eventually ends up winning it. In her new role, she decided to support women’s rights and fought for them. Gangu continued with her support and advocated for the education rights of girls from brothels in front of the media. Gangubai questioned in her speech at a rally that prostitutes are providing service to everyone without any discrimination then why are they the one who ends up getting discriminated against? After hearing the news that the school had submitted a plea to vacate the brothel in the Supreme Court, Gangu travels to Delhi, to meet Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to legalise prostitution. PM Nehru didn’t legalise prostitution but agreed to set up a committee for this as he prevented both the brothel and Kamathipura from being vacated.
